Equipment

It depends on how you are connecting to the Internet. The two main options are,

1. Through a landline

2. Through a mobile device like a mobile telephone.

Landline

Connecting though a landline is more complex and involves more equipment. The list of equipment is as follows,

1. Access to a landline.

2. A telephone socket.

3. A microfilter for the telephone socket.

4. An ASDL cable modem, ethernet cable router or wireless router.

5. A device to browse the Internet and connect to the router, such as a PC or PDA.

Not all landline's can connect to broadband. While the UK aims for full broadband coverage by 2012. Currently many rural area's of the UK cannot access broadband.

Mobile Device

If you are connecting to the broadband through a mobile phone, then all you may need is a mobile phone. The technologies and protocols used by mobile phones to connect to the Internet differs, but the lack of cables and further equipment is a mainstay. Some mobile handsets offer WiFi access. O2's Cloud and BT Openzone are Wi-Fi networks located in many urban spaces up and down the UK. 3G access can be offered through a handset, or a USB dongle for laptops.
